Random Ramblings #3: Crochet granny square cardigans

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything here! The first quarter of this year went by fast. I haven’t had much time to do digital art, but I’ve managed to finish two crocheted pieces: granny square cardigans!

The first cardigan I did followed the free pattern by Dublin Bay Crochet. There’s a video tutorial for this pattern and it’s a great pattern for beginners! I changed the colors so that instead of daisies, the flowers would look like sunflowers. I also added some half granny squares to the sleeves to add a little bit more length to them. I started this project at the beginning of January and finished it already in early February.

The second cardigan pattern I’ve finished is “Jack of All Trades” by red bean dream. It’s a paid pattern but I think it’s worth the price. It includes video tutorials for the granny squares, though some prior knowledge about assembling a crochet cardigan is useful (which for me made it a great second crochet garment project). But if you’re interested in free pattern alternatives, there should be tutorials for all the card suit symbols on Youtube. I followed byredbean’s patterns almost precisely, but I slightly altered the diamond square pattern for a sharper shape. I also made a longer version of the cardigan (which requires 88 squares in total) but I left out one row of squares from the hem. I started this in March and finished it in April.

Both were fun to make and have taught me a thing and a two about crochet. As garments, I have already worn them multiple times since I’ve finished them, though I might slightly adjust the sunflower cardigan to add button holes. For yarns I used what is commonly available here in Finland, aka Novita “Seitsemän veljestä” yarns.
